Carolyn and Jo Ann, retired teachers from Boone
County, talk about faith, commitment and friendship when they
speak about their experiences mentoring two teen-aged girls
from Covington.
The two friends already had busy, active lives,
when they heard about a mentoring program at Two Rivers Middle
School. Still they were willing and eager to give their time
to mentor two girls, Brittany and Diamond.
The two, fast friends, decided they wanted to
mentor together two girls who were also friends.
From their very first meeting, the foursome
has set about learning, listening and having fun. Their outings
have included movies, plays and Dominos-playing sessions at
the park. “We’ve had fun times, not so fun times, and
sad times as well,” writes Carolyn in a church newsletter.
They have shared meals, cultural and educational
experiences, ‘girl talks’, feelings about life,
and personal issues.
Carolyn and Jo Ann have tried to provide stability
for the girls and set achievable goals. “It’s about faith
and commitment; about impacting the life of a child in a positive,
caring way, so she can grow into a responsible young woman,” Carolyn
says.
Jo Ann and her young friend, Brittany, enjoy
each other’s company.
“I just think we have a good friendship,” Jo
Ann said. “We have no problem conversing. We’ve enjoyed
a lot of things together.”
The two women hope they will have many more
opportunities to enjoy the company of their two young friends.
