Frequently Asked Questions

Our Big Brothers have an amazing track record of starting life-changing friendships that last for years.  Having a Big Brother is a huge step to teaching at-risk youth how to stay in school, stay out of trouble and REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.

That’s why Big Brothers in Greater Cincinnati are in great demand.

Why do we REALLY need Big Brothers?
More than 70% of children waiting for a Big are boys, but only 3 out of every 10 inquiries to volunteer come from men. Disproportionately, the children we serve and those waiting to be matched are African-American and Hispanic boys. Our call for volunteers includes an especially passionate appeal to men of color.

What’s the application process like?
It starts by filling out the on-line application. Our team will follow-up and you can expect a reference and police check, plus an in-person interview. Our enrollment team wants to make sure we know you so we can match you with just the right Little Brother, so the two of you can have an impactful, life-changing friendship. For more information about being a Big, please contact our Chief Program Officer Peter Boudreau, at boudreau@bigsforkids.org  513-421-4120 ext. 822.

When can I see my Little Brother?
You, along with your Little Brother and his parent/guardian, decide together what you want to do.  We recommend that you keep a consistent schedule of outings and get together on a regular basis. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati can  provide more guidance on this.  When you have any questions, your Match Support Specialist is just an email or phone call away.

What kind of support can I expect from Big Brothers Big Sisters once I get matched?
Once you are matched with your Little Brother, a Match Support Specialist from the agency will be in regular contact with you to provide assistance and give feedback. Any time you are unsure about what to do or how to handle a situation, you will have a Match Support Specialist there to help. They’ll help you with ideas for activities, guidance for handling possible difficult situations, and feedback on how you are making a difference.

Will I become a replacement parent?
No. Littles have a parent or guardian in their life already. What they need is a Big to spend quality, one-on-one time with them. Someone to have fun with, someone they can confide in, someone like you!
